Membership & Training

Membership of Halifax & District Amateur Radio Society is open to anyone who is interested in radio or electronics – they do not need to be a licensed radio amateur, or aspire to be one. Among other benefits, members are entitled to use or borrow club equipment and to borrow books from the club library.

We have some equipment which has been given to us and which is available for use by members. The Committee strive to schedule a series of activities to extend the members’ interests in amateur radio and are open to all suggestions for new activities.

The annual membership fee is currently twenty Pounds with concessions for families, those with reduced incomes, or young people in full-time education. However, we charge a small meeting subscription of around two pounds when we meet to pay for the hire of the rooms, but this does include refreshments!

Training

HADARS can offer training for all three exam levels (Foundation, Intermediate and Full). Our meeting place is a registered exam centre, so we can also arrange for students to take the relevant examinations at our Club HQ, with prior notification. However, since the introduction of remotely-invigilated examinations by the RSGB, it is now possible to take the exams in the comfort of your own home – provided you have the necessary computer equipment and video link.

Advice on both the course syllabus and remote invigilated exams can be obtained through our training team here at the Club. We can offer full course tuition and coaching, or simply one-to-one coaching to support independent home study, at all levels of the current license scheme.

For all training enquiries, please contact us by email at G2UG@hadars.org.uk, or directly through the club on any club night.

Our resident CW (Morse Code) Coach, Max Townend G4SDX, is available for individual tuition and coaching in the fine art of CW – we also run occasional 16 week beginners classes which support on-line learning and home study. These tend to run from September to December, depending on the level of interest at the time.

Our activity calendar includes the HADARS ‘Rig Clinic’ where members can bring along their own radio equipment for hands on expert tuition and coaching, in order to get the best out of their equipment. We also have the club shack running on most Tuesday evenings, showcasing the latest Digital technology, and providing an opportunity for less experienced members to get on-air and shake off their ‘first contact’ nerves!
